Signing ceremony of Memorandum of Understanding between Nuclear Agency and for Radioactive Waste of Romania and the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) from the United Kingdom

On 17th of March, 2014, Mr. Florin Constantin Tatar, President of Nuclear Agency and for Radioactive Waste and Mr. Peter Hiller, Director of National Nuclear Laboratory ( NNL ) have signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the cooperation in the field of radioactive waste management.

The signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding took place at the premises of the Embassy of Romania in London.

At the signing ceremony attended His Excellency Dr Ion Jinga , Ambassador of Romania in the United Kingdom and the British representatives: Mr. Paul Howarth , Director, NNL , Mr. Matt Randall, Expert Environmental Services, NNL, Mr. Peter Hiller Business Manager, and Mr. Matthew Grainger Sector Manager.

Agreed in the context of European legislation in the field, of the actions foreseen within the Strategic Partnership between Romania and United Kingdom, as well as in the context of the discussions held by the President of the Nuclear Agency and for Radioactive Waste with the partners from the UK that took place in January 2014, the Memorandum sets out the general framework of cooperation between the two Parties on the radioactive waste management.

The main areas of cooperation covers: the strategy on nuclear domain sustainable development and on radioactive waste management, public acceptance, design, construction and operation of nuclear installations, as well as the decommissioning of nuclear facilities.

National Nuclear Laboratory is the only organization in the UK with the skills, facilities and expertise to provide technical support for all areas of the nuclear industry, providing also technical support for the UK Government. NNL collaborates with many national laboratories around the world, providing a full range of services covering all the nuclear fuel cycle.

During the collaboration, Nuclear Agency and Radioactive Waste will build on the British experience in the nuclear field through joint action for initiating and signing the Memorandum of Understanding.
